UGC NET December 2026 Information Bulletin: Dates, Eligibility & Rules Explained
Official bulletin decoded • December 2026
The UGC NET December 2026 information bulletin explains who can apply, how much to pay, what happens in the examination and how NET results are used for JRF, Assistant Professor eligibility and PhD admission. The updated version is dated 16 October 2026. NTA conducts UGC NET on behalf of the University Grants Commission.
The regular application and fee-payment deadline is 28 October 2026 at 11:50 PM IST. A late application window runs from 29 to 31 October with an additional ₹500 fee. The revised examination dates are 14–18 December and 21 December 2026, with the subject-wise schedule to be notified separately.
This guide translates the 100-page bulletin into practical decisions. It covers all subjects, with additional pointers for Visual Arts aspirants. You can download the original document, check the dates and fees, understand the eligibility routes and use the application and exam-day checklists below.
Source and version check: 21 October 2026. This guide follows the updated NTA bulletin dated 16 October 2026. Later NTA public notices, corrigenda and admit-card instructions must also be checked. Dates described as proposed or awaiting notification should not be treated as a confirmed subject-specific timetable.
Explanations and examples are by ashacademy. The official bulletin remains the authority for eligibility and examination rules.

UGC NET December 2026 application fee and late fee
| Category | Regular examination fee | During late window, including ₹500 late fee |
|---|---|---|
| General / Unreserved | ₹1,150 | ₹1,650 |
| General-EWS / OBC-NCL | ₹600 | ₹1,100 |
| SC / ST / Third Gender | ₹325 | ₹825 |
| PwD / PwBD | ₹325 | ₹825 |
The late-window totals above are the category fee plus ₹500. Applicable payment processing or service charges and GST, if any, are additional and depend on the payment method and gateway. Check the final amount before paying; Annexure I gives the gateway details.
Money deducted but no Confirmation Page?
A bank debit alone does not prove a completed application. Check the portal’s payment status and contact the relevant bank or payment gateway using Annexure I. If payment has not reached NTA and remains unsuccessful, the bulletin requires another successful payment within the deadline. Failed or duplicate payments are handled through reconciliation and the applicable refund process.
The fee for a successfully submitted application is non-refundable. This is different from reconciliation of failed or duplicate transactions. Keep your transaction reference and Confirmation Page.
UGC NET December 2026 eligibility, explained by qualification
The examination determines eligibility of Indian nationals for the specified NET outcomes. First identify the qualification on which you are applying. The Master’s route and the four-year undergraduate route lead to different possibilities.
1. Master’s degree or recognised equivalent
| Category | Minimum Master’s marks |
|---|---|
| General / Unreserved and General-EWS | 55%, without rounding off |
| OBC-NCL, SC, ST, PwD/PwBD and Third Gender | 50%, without rounding off |
EWS does not receive the 50% Master’s threshold in this bulletin. A General-EWS candidate needs 55%. Similarly, a score just below the required percentage cannot be rounded up to meet eligibility.
Final-year Master’s students and candidates awaiting delayed results can apply provisionally. They must complete the degree with the required marks within two years of the NET result for the JRF/Assistant Professor route. For the PhD-only category, the completion period is one year.
Candidates should normally choose their postgraduate subject. If it is not listed among NET subjects, the bulletin permits a related subject. Verify recognition and equivalence rather than assuming any diploma counts as a Master’s degree. For Indian postgraduate diplomas, check the applicable AIU equivalence; foreign qualifications are addressed under the UGC’s 2025 equivalence regulations.
PhD holders whose Master’s examination was completed by 19 September 1991 receive the specified five percentage-point relaxation from 55% to 50%, irrespective of the declaration date of the result.
2. Four-year / eight-semester bachelor’s degree
This route normally requires 75% aggregate marks or an equivalent grade. The bulletin provides a five percentage-point relaxation for eligible SC, ST, OBC-NCL, differently abled, EWS and other categories covered by the applicable UGC provisions.
Crucial distinction: qualifying NET on the basis of a four-year bachelor’s degree can make a candidate eligible for JRF and PhD admission. It does not make that candidate eligible for appointment as Assistant Professor.
Final-year or final-semester students of this four-year programme may apply provisionally, subject to fulfilling the UGC requirements within the prescribed period: two years for the JRF route and one year for PhD-only qualification. These candidates may choose the NET subject in which they wish to pursue a PhD, irrespective of their undergraduate discipline.
For BFA/MFA aspirants: check the actual duration, recognition, marks and qualification route. A three-year bachelor’s degree should not be assumed to satisfy the four-year route. An eligible recognised MFA or equivalent is assessed under the postgraduate conditions.
Submitting a form or receiving an admit card is not final verification of eligibility. Candidates remain responsible for having the required qualifications and valid supporting documents.

UGC NET JRF age limit for December 2026
For JRF, the candidate must be not more than 30 years old on 1 December 2026. Use this reference date, rather than your application date.
- Up to five years’ relaxation: eligible OBC-NCL candidates on the Central List, SC, ST, PwD/PwBD, Third Gender and women candidates.
- Research experience: relaxation equivalent to eligible research experience, up to five years, subject to the stated subject relevance and authorised certification. Research undertaken towards completing a bachelor’s or Master’s degree is excluded.
- LLM: three years’ relaxation under the bulletin’s conditions.
- Armed forces service: up to five years, subject to the length of eligible service and the prescribed reference date.
The total age relaxation cannot exceed five years. Do not add several concessions together to claim more than that cap.
There is no upper age limit for the Assistant Professor or PhD admission routes. Appointment and admission still depend on the relevant qualifications, regulations and institutional process.
NET, SET and SLET exemptions
Assistant Professor exemptions follow applicable UGC regulations; a PhD should not automatically be treated as an exemption. Chapter 2 also explains the specific pre-1989 UGC/CSIR JRF exemption and SET rules. A qualifying SET held before 1 December 2002 has the stated nationwide applicability; SET held from that date onwards is limited to the state concerned.
How to fill the UGC NET December 2026 application form
Apply only through the registration link on the official UGC NET website. Do not confuse UGC NET with the separate Joint CSIR-UGC NET examination or use its application deadline.
- Prepare your details. Keep your own working mobile number and email address, identity details, qualifications, category documents and required upload files ready.
- Register and retain your application number. MeriPehchaan SSO is enabled in the application process. Follow the live portal’s registration and verification prompts, and keep your login details private.
- Complete the form carefully. Check name, date of birth, category, disability status, educational qualification, NET subject, medium, addresses and city preferences against your records.
- Capture the live photograph and upload your files. The live capture and uploaded recent photograph are separate requirements.
- Pay the applicable fee. Check the payment status and final gateway amount.
- Download the Confirmation Page. Save it yourself after successful payment. Keep a backup and a copy of the transaction reference.
Photograph, signature and disability upload requirements
| Item | Requirement in the bulletin |
|---|---|
| Recent uploaded photograph | 10–200 KB; colour or black and white; 80% face including ears visible, without mask, against a white background |
| Live photograph | Capture during application; light-coloured background, proper lighting and clear face including ears, without mask |
| Signature | 10–50 KB |
| Disability / UDID certificate, where applicable | Legible PDF, 50–300 KB |
If your computer has no camera, the bulletin provides a QR-based phone or tablet option for live capture. Use your own photograph, signature and certificates. Check the current portal’s accepted file types before uploading.
Keep Aadhaar details and photograph updated where used for verification. Disability information may be verified through UDID; where no UDID is available, upload the required disability certificate according to the instructions. Resolve mismatches within the permitted correction period.
Correction window: 2–4 November 2026
Only fields permitted by NTA can be corrected. The existence of a correction window does not mean every entry can be changed. Review the correction notice and finish permitted changes by 11:50 PM IST on 4 November.
No fresh claim or correction of PwD/PwBD status will be accepted after that window closes. Do not plan to add a category benefit later. Applications and documents are not to be sent to NTA by post, email, fax, WhatsApp or hand delivery.

UGC NET December 2026 exam pattern and marking rules
The examination is a computer-based test with objective multiple-choice questions. Paper I assesses teaching and research aptitude and related general abilities. Paper II tests your chosen subject. All questions are compulsory. Visual Arts follows this written CBT pattern; the bulletin does not prescribe a separate drawing practical.
Question papers are in English and Hindi, except language papers. Select your medium carefully. Where translation is ambiguous, the English version prevails under the bulletin.
Is there negative marking?
No. A correct answer earns two marks; an incorrect or unanswered question earns zero. The following special evaluation rules also matter:
| Situation | How marks are awarded |
|---|---|
| More than one option is found correct | Two marks for candidates who selected any correct option |
| All options are found correct | Two marks for candidates who attempted the question |
| Question is wrong, dropped or has no correct option | Two marks only for candidates who attempted it |
| Saved answer marked for review | Evaluated |
| Marked for review without a saved answer | Not evaluated |
CBT buttons: selecting an option is not enough
Click Save & Next to save an answer. Clicking another question number in the palette does not save the answer currently on screen. Mark for Review & Next saves a selected answer and flags it for later review. With no selected answer, it only flags the question.
You can move between Paper I and Paper II during the combined time; there is no separate time limit for each paper. Answers can be changed until the timer ends. The test ends automatically at zero. If the computer or mouse malfunctions, inform the invigilator immediately. Annexure IX provides for terminal replacement, retention of saved responses and adjustment of lost time at the server.

Reservation, PwD/PwBD, scribe and compensatory time
OBC-NCL benefits require inclusion in the Central List. A candidate included only in a state OBC list must not select OBC-NCL on that basis. Check the category and certificate requirements before submission.
The bulletin lists the applicable central-institution reservation policy: SC 15%, ST 7.5%, OBC-NCL 27%, General-EWS 10%, with 5% PwBD reservation within the specified categories. These are reservation provisions, not promises that the same percentages of candidates will automatically pass NET.
PwBD generally refers to a certified benchmark disability of at least 40%. However, a candidate with less than 40% disability and a certified writing difficulty may also qualify for a scribe and/or compensatory time under the specified provisions.
- Documents depend on the disability and writing limitation. The bulletin distinguishes blindness, both-arms-affected locomotor disability and cerebral palsy from other cases requiring medical certification of writing difficulty.
- Relevant forms: Annexure VI covers physical limitation in writing; Annexure VII is the undertaking for an own scribe; Annexure VIII covers the specified below-40% disability cases with writing difficulty.
- Scribe arrangements: eligible candidates can request an NTA-provided scribe or bring their own, subject to the prescribed qualification and documentation conditions. An own scribe’s qualification should be one step below the candidate’s qualification under the bulletin.
- Compensatory time: eligible candidates receive at least 20 minutes per examination hour, meaning at least one additional hour for the three-hour test, subject to the applicable rules. Entitlement is not determined merely by whether a scribe is actually used.
- Scribe’s role: read questions and click answers as directed by the candidate; no explanation or suggested answers.
Declare the need accurately during application and arrange valid certificates early. Annexure XII reproduces the specified-disability schedule; it should not be used to self-certify eligibility for a particular facility.

Exam cities, city intimation slip and admit card
Choose four examination cities in priority order, subject to the portal’s options and the states of your present or permanent address. If fewer than four are available, follow the choices shown by the portal. City preferences may be revised during the permitted correction window.
A preferred city is not guaranteed. NTA may merge or allot cities according to administrative requirements. Use Annexure III for the official city list rather than an old screenshot.
The city intimation slip is not the admit card. Download the admit card separately and check your name, photograph, subject, date, shift, centre, reporting time and instructions. It will not be sent by post. Do not alter an admit card yourself; report any error immediately and follow NTA’s instructions.
What to carry on examination day
- An A4 printout of the e-Admit Card, with the required self-declaration completed as instructed.
- One passport-size photograph, the same as uploaded in the application.
- One original, valid, non-expired authorised photo ID. The bulletin lists College ID, PAN card, passport, Aadhaar with photograph, e-Aadhaar with photograph and bank passbook with photograph.
- Applicable disability and scribe-related documents.
- Relevant legal proof if your name has changed, for example through marriage or another recognised name-change process.
Report two hours before commencement, following the admit-card instructions. Gates close 30 minutes before the examination starts. There is no re-test for a candidate who misses the scheduled examination.
Dress code, permitted items and belongings
Wear simple, comfortable clothing suitable for the weather. Heavy layers and large pockets may require additional checks. Normal shoes, slippers and low-heeled sandals are allowed; long boots are not. The bulletin provides for female candidates to be frisked by female staff in a private enclosure.
Phones, electronic devices, calculators, watches of every kind, personal stationery and notes, bags, wallets, belts and ornaments or metallic items are among the barred articles. There is no storage facility. A pen and rough sheets are provided at the centre.
Drinking water in a transparent bottle is specifically allowed. Diabetic candidates have the stated exception for sugar tablets and unpacked whole fruits such as banana, apple or orange. This does not create a general permission to carry snacks.
Cultural/customary dress reporting needs attention. Section 10.1.3 refers to reporting two hours before commencement, while Section 10.2.1(b) uses “two hours before the last reporting time.” These are different wordings. Check the admit card and seek clarification from NTA if this applies to you, allowing time for additional frisking. Medical or weather-related deviations require the prior approval described in the bulletin.
Inside the examination hall
Sit only at your allotted terminal. Check the name, photograph and subject on screen before proceeding; report any mismatch immediately. Follow the invigilator’s entry, exit and attendance instructions.
Write your name and the identification number requested by the invigilator on the provided rough sheets. The official FAQ clarifies that either the Application Number or Roll Number may be used. Return all sheets after the examination; exchanging rough sheets is prohibited.
Impersonation, manipulated documents or photographs, prohibited devices, unauthorised assistance and misuse of a scribe are treated as unfair means. The bulletin provides for actions including cancellation or non-declaration of results, debarment for up to three years and criminal action where applicable.

Answer key, qualifying marks, cut-off and percentile
Provisional answer key and recorded responses
NTA will announce the display window separately. The bulletin anticipates a short window, likely two to three days, for the question paper, recorded responses and provisional answer key. Download your responses while available.
If you dispute an answer, submit a challenge through the prescribed portal with supporting evidence by the deadline. The fee is ₹200 per challenged question, non-refundable. Email is not a substitute for the paid challenge procedure. Subject experts review challenges; results follow the final answer key, and individual challenge outcomes are not separately communicated.
Are 40% or 35% marks enough to qualify?
No. They are minimum aggregate thresholds for consideration, not the final qualifying cut-offs.
| Category | Minimum across both papers together |
|---|---|
| General / Unreserved and General-EWS | 40%, equivalent to 120 out of 300 |
| Reserved categories specified in the bulletin | 35%, equivalent to 105 out of 300 |
Final qualification depends on subject-wise and category-wise cut-offs and the relevant allocation procedure. For example, a General candidate scoring 120/300 reaches the minimum but does not automatically qualify for Assistant Professor eligibility or JRF.
The Assistant Professor procedure starts with slots corresponding to 6% of Master’s-based candidates who appeared in both papers, then applies reservation and subject/category allocation. It should not be simplified to “the top 6% in every subject qualify.” JRF allocation is a separate process. Four-year bachelor’s candidates do not gain Assistant Professor eligibility through that route.
Percentage, percentile and normalisation are different
Single-shift subject: the bulletin plans one shift per subject. Qualification and cut-offs use aggregate Paper I and Paper II raw marks. A percentile is also reported to show relative standing, but it is not used to decide qualification or cut-offs.
Multi-shift exception: if a subject must be conducted in more than one shift, Annexure XI’s equi-percentile method applies. The method finds equivalent marks at the same within-shift percentile and averages them across shifts, using interpolation where needed. Normalised marks replace raw aggregate marks for the minimum threshold, cut-offs and the specified PhD use.
Easy example: 180/300 is 60% marks. A 90 percentile score instead means that 90% of candidates in the relevant subject scored equal to or below that candidate under the applicable calculation. It does not mean 90% marks. This example explains the distinction; it is not a predicted score-to-percentile conversion.
There is no provision for rechecking or re-evaluation. Preserve your Confirmation Page, admit card, response record and scorecard. The bulletin states that examination records are retained for up to 90 days after the result, and recorded responses will not be available after results through the described RTI route.

JRF, Assistant Professor and PhD: what your NET category means
| Result category | JRF | Assistant Professor | PhD admission |
|---|---|---|---|
| Category 1 | Yes | Yes* | Yes |
| Category 2 | No | Yes* | Yes |
| Category 3 | No | No | Yes |
*Subject to the qualifying-degree route and applicable eligibility rules. Candidates qualifying on the four-year bachelor’s basis are not eligible for Assistant Professor appointment through that route.
NET qualification is not an automatic job, admission offer or payment of fellowship. Universities and institutions apply their admission or recruitment requirements, and fellowship requires the prescribed placement and conditions.
- Category 2 and Category 3 PhD admissions: NET marks carry 70% weightage and the institution’s interview/viva carries 30%. NET marks for this purpose are valid for one year from the result date.
- JRF-qualified PhD applicants: admission follows the interview process and applicable UGC PhD regulations.
- JRF offer: valid for three years from the date of issue of the JRF award letter for securing the required placement. For a candidate already pursuing a PhD, fellowship commencement follows the result date or joining date, whichever is later, under the stated conditions.
The one-year PhD score validity and three-year JRF offer validity refer to different things. Do not interchange them. National fellowships such as NFSC, NFOBC and NFPwD also follow their respective ministry guidelines and conditions.

Visual Arts aspirants: turn the bulletin into a preparation plan
The official subject list uses Visual Art, subject code 79. Use the subject code, not its row’s serial number. Check your qualification route, choose the correct subject and keep Paper I in your preparation plan.
- Finish registration first. Verify payment and save the Confirmation Page before the deadline.
- Study the actual syllabus. Use our UGC NET Visual Arts syllabus December 2026 decoded guide for the unit map and original English and Hindi syllabus PDFs.
- Practise the combined CBT. Build familiarity with 50 Paper I and 100 Paper II questions in one 180-minute session. Practise saving answers and reviewing flagged questions.
- Use questions to diagnose gaps. Connect artists, works, chronology, aesthetics, materials and techniques instead of memorising isolated names. Review errors against the relevant syllabus unit.
- Check subject-specific notices. Do not book travel on the assumption that every Visual Arts candidate will sit on the first overall examination date.
These preparation suggestions are ashacademy’s study guidance, not additional NTA examination rules.

What are the UGC NET December 2026 exam dates?
The updated bulletin lists 14–18 December and 21 December 2026 as the proposed examination dates. The subject-wise schedule is to be notified separately; check your admit card for your own date and shift.
Can an EWS candidate apply with 50% in a Master’s degree?
The Master’s requirement for General-EWS is 55%, without rounding off. Do not confuse the lower EWS application fee with a lower postgraduate marks requirement.
Can I apply after a four-year bachelor’s degree?
Yes, subject to the specified 75% aggregate or equivalent grade and applicable relaxation. This route is for JRF and PhD eligibility, not Assistant Professor appointment.
Will a dropped question give marks to everyone?
No. Under Section 3.5 of this updated bulletin, two marks are awarded only to candidates who attempted the dropped or defective question.
Does a saved answer marked for review count?
Yes. A saved answer marked for review is evaluated. A question marked for review without an answer is not evaluated.
Is the Visual Arts examination date confirmed?
The overall window does not confirm a subject-specific date. Check NTA’s subject schedule and your admit card rather than assuming a Visual Arts shift.
